Inssi – instructions

How to record a practice drive and when the instructor presses a button

Inssi records the practice drive and assesses it using the criteria of Traficom's driving-test guideline. The app measures speeds, accelerations, turns, indicator use and the driver's gaze by itself. The instructor marks only what the sensors cannot see: situations where they had to intervene, and how the handling tasks went.

Before the drive

  1. Fix the phone in a mount in landscape on the windscreen or dashboard so that the ROAD view shows the road and the DRIVER view shows the driver's face. Landscape gives the road camera the widest view.
  2. Check the status rows. GPS: accuracy shown. Driver: face detected. Plug the phone into a charger – two cameras drain the battery.
  3. Press START DRIVE. Recording starts after a 10-second countdown. Take your hands off the phone before zero. During the drive the driver does not touch the phone.

During the drive – when the instructor presses a button

ButtonPress whenDon't press when
Instructor had to interveneYou had to prevent a dangerous situation: you grabbed the wheel, used the instructor brake or handbrake, or ordered a sudden stop or braking. In the driving test an examiner's intervention means a fail, so the app assesses the drive as failed. You gave ordinary advice or reminders ("check the mirror", "indicator") or route guidance in advance. That is not an intervention.
Near missAnother road user had to brake or swerve because of us, or the driver had to brake hard – but you did not need to intervene. You had to intervene yourself – then only "Instructor had to intervene", not both.
StalledThe engine stalled. A single stall is a minor handling error; repeated stalls lower the handling score.
KerbThe car hit or mounted the kerb while driving, turning or parking.

Handling tasks

The driving test includes at least two handling tasks: reversing, parking, U-turn or hill start. Press the task's button right after it and choose:

What you don't need to mark

Indicator use, speeds and limits, acceleration and braking, mirror and blind-spot checks, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights on the route – the app measures these itself.

What kind of drive matches the test

After the drive

The assessment is not Traficom's assessment and does not guarantee passing the driving test. Responsibility for the drive always lies with the driver and the holder of the learner permit.
